iWOW modems enable wireless security monitoring of power sub-stations throughout Singapore

Singapore, 14 November 2005

Singapore-based iWOW Connections Pte Ltd (iWOW) has provided wireless communications capability for a new video security monitoring system installed by SP PowerGrid, Singapore’s electricity transporter, to monitor some 40 medium voltage electricity sub-stations throughout Singapore.

The security monitoring system uses iWOW’s iTegno modems to transmit real-time motion video images captured by CCTV cameras from each sub-station to SP PowerGrid’s control centre. The iTegno modems enable SP PowerGrid to monitor its sub-stations round-the-clock using “always-on” GPRS network.

The wireless technology provided by iWOW has enabled SP PowerGrid to extend security monitoring even to its remote sub-stations. This has improved SP PowerGrid’s day-to-day operational cost efficiency as well as security. PowerGrid is always harnessing advanced technology to improve its efficiency and cost-performance.

‘The video security monitoring system is provided by Willowglen Services Pte Ltd. According to Willowglen, the key advantages of the iTegno modems are their remote system reset feature and data transmission stability. “The iTegno modems are easy to deploy and configure, and they provide straightforward integration with Willowglen’s SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) system via RS232 serial connectivity,” said Mr Cheong Fong Hoon, Senior Business Development Manager of Willowglen. “The modems can be easily customised to suit a wide range of deployment requirements.”

The iTegno modems transmit data from the individual sub-stations to a server in SP PowerGrid’s control centre via M1’s GPRS services. “M1 and iWOW have been partners in offering communication solutions to our customers since 2003. iWOW’s iTegno modems, supported by M1’s GPRS network, have played important roles in optimising business operations. The success of SP PowerGrid’s wireless monitoring system is an example of how businesses can benefit from the deployment of wireless technology,” said Mr Wong Weng Thong, General Manager, Corporate Sales, M1.
